Class Descriptions
Classes
Yoga:
Tools for exploring and balancing body, breath and mind in order to experience peace and well-being. All of our classes fall under the Hatha Yoga umbrella and include postures, breathing and a period of relaxation. The various class styles listed below primarily refer to how the postures (asanas) are practiced. Please also read the descriptions of levels at the bottom of this page.
Hatha/Yoga Basics:
These classes are great for brand new beginners and those with specific physical concerns, emphasizing postural alignment and basic breathing techniques. We also recommend Hatha classes for continuing students who want to slow down, deepen their practice and rejuvenate. Standing, seated and inverted postures will be taught so they are accessible and beneficial to everyone. Sun salutations typical of flow style classes are generally not included.
Flow:
Dynamic classes that typically include sun salutations, standing, seated and inverted poses linked with Ujjayi breath. Each class varies by level and instructor, but Flow Yoga generally derives influences from: Ashtanga, Anusara, Iyengar, Sivananda and Jivamukti yoga styles. We recommend new students or those looking for a more moderate pace begin with Level 1 & 2 classes.
Vinyasa Flow:
Vinyasa refers to the linking of postures with conscious movement (sun salutations), Ujjayi breathing and continuity of attention. Vinyasa classes offer an athletic pace with varying emphasis (i.e. hips, backbends, twists, arm balances). Ashtanga-inspired classes are based on the Primary Series, which also includes sun salutations, standing, seated and inverted postures.
Anusara:
Vinyasa Flow classes based on specific alignment principles (developed by John Friend) interwoven with life-affirming yoga philosophy. Wednesday at Noon (Levels 1 & 2).
Yoga for Backs:
This class is ideal for anyone with back, neck, shoulder or other related injuries or pain looking for a safe rehabilitation or preventative practice. Also great for beginners who seek a slower, more gentle pace and detailed alignment.
Prenatal:
Guided breathing, stretching and strengthening tailored for the needs and capabilities of pregnant women (NO PRIOR YOGA EXPERIENCE NECESSARY). Includes instruction on how to use yoga to ease pregnancy and childbirth. We advise expectant mothers to begin in their fourth month, after the first trimester is completed. We host a special Prenatal Partner class the first Sunday of the month from 11:30-12:45pm ($15 per person/ $30 per pair) in place of the regular class. Partners can be significant others, friends, doulas, etc. No experience necessary. Drop-ins welcome.
Restorative:
A restorative practice calms the nerves and recharges your batteries. Often supported by the use of props, poses are held for long periods of time allowing the body to fully relax and open. In addition, conscious breathing - the direct link between your body and mind - is employed to move you into deeper and deeper levels of relaxation. As your body lets go of stress and the chatter of the mind quiets, you experience your peaceful, true self.
Donation Classes:
Levels 1 & 2 Flow yoga classes (see description of Flow above) led by Yoga One's Teacher Training graduates. Yoga one packages apply as usual. Suggested drop in rate $10, but pay what you feel.
